Product Data Exchange and CAD Team
Charter

The NASA Product Data Exchange Working Group, which was initiated at the direction of NASA Chief Engineer, was chartered to operate under the auspices of, and report to, the Engineering Management Council. The initial objective of this Group was to promote the effective implementation of international product data exchange standards in the Agency.

The NASA CAD Team, chartered by the NASA CIO, has now been combined with the PDE Working Group to form a single team, the NASA PDE/CAD Team, for technical coordination and policy guidance on product data, computer-aided design, engineering, and manufacturing tools, and related software.

For the purposes of this Charter, product data is defined to be the sum of design information related to the full engineering and manufacturing life cycle of a product. This Team will develop an environment and methods to support and exploit emerging product data exchange standards (including, but not limited to, STEP, the Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) to enhance NASA's capabilities for technical data exchanges among engineering and operations sites.

The mission of this working group includes:

  1. identification and periodic re-evaluation of data exchange practices at Agency sites;
  2. identification of data exchange requirements for STEP implementation in the Agency;
  3. support to, and active participation in, the meetings of technical committees and pilot implementation teams in the PDES, Inc. consortium; and
  4. sponsorship and coordination among Agency and industry sites of demonstrations and pilot test projects to further the understanding and implementation of data exchange standards.

The NASA PDE/CAD Team will be made up of representatives from the NASA sites, and will operate through regular audio telecons and periodic group meetings at selected sites. The representative membership will select a Team Leader, and will develop goals, objectives, and a plan of action for the Team's activities. Reports will be provided to the Engineering Management Council on a schedule to be determined by the Team, in coordination with guidance from the Council. The Team will operate in this manner until disbanded by action of the Council.
